The Ford Motor Company is a US based company multinational Automaker headquartered in Michigan. Ford India Private Limited is a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company with headquarters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Ford entered the Indian market in the year 1926 but got out of business in 1954 due to losses. It re-entered the market in October 1955 as Mahindra Ford India Limited which was a 50-50 joint venture of Mahindra and Mahindra with Ford. Its stakes were increased in 1998 and was retitled to Ford India Private Limited.
In 1998, they began the production of Ford Escort which was replaced by Ford Ikon in 2001. Ford Figo was launched in March 2010, a compact car specially designed for Indian masses. Fusion and Mondeo have been few other cars in the limelight but were discontinued later.
The plant located in Tamil Nadu was expanded to produce 200,000 vehicles annually and 250,000 engines annually. Ford Ecosport was launched in June 2013 along with this expansion. This car comes with various engine options 1.0L EcoBoost, 1.5L Ti-VCT and 1.5L TDCi with 5-speed manual and 6-speed dual clutch transmission
The company is coming up with bigger and technically advanced plant in Gujarat and with this they will be capable of manufacturing 440,000 cars and 610,000 engines annually.
Ford Endeavour was launched in the mid-size sports utility vehicle segment in the year 2003 and has held a strong position in the market.
They have 260 dealerships across 138 cities in 23 states and 3 Union Territories of India.
Ford also runs driving skill programs and also volunteers in donation programs for the poor as their corporate social responsibility along with blood donation camps, improving education, access to safe drinking water, sanitation and vocational training for women in nearby villages.
