Datsun

Datsun is a sub brand of Nissan Motor Company with its separate identity which began its own production in the year 1931. Earlier the vehicles exported or imported by Nissan were identified at Datsun. The company did away with the name but in 2013 they planned to bring it back with low cost vehicles for the Indian Market.

In 1931, the company derived its name from DAT Motorcar Company. DAT already produced big vehicles; hence the name Dat”son” was given for the smaller cars it would create. When Nissan took over, it changed the name to Dat”sun” as “son “also meant loss in Japanese and “sun” was an honor to the national flag.

In March 2012 it was announced that the brand would be revived for the markets in Indonesia, South Africa, India and Russia. This low cost brand aims to earn the goodwill and reliability of major segments of the market.

Datsun Go was launched in 2014 which is built at Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai and is based on Nissan Micra platform. The production of Datsun GO was also planned for Russia and Indonesia. Datsun on do was launched in Russia in 2014 but it is expected that all the cars will be sold in all the markets. The cars are available in Petrol engined models only, soon to be launched in diesel models.

The Datsun name is most famous for the 510, Fairlady roadsters, and later the Fairlady (240Z) coupes around the world.
