In India also, Chevrolet was launched under General Motor India operations. General Motors was originally a joint venture with Hindustan Motors and as Chevrolet it began its business in June 2003. Prior to this, it was launched in 1928 but the government had forcefully shut it in 1953. It is now the 5th largest car maker in India after Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra. Until then, General Motors sold Opel Corsa, Opel Astra and Opel Vectra. It entered the market with Optra.
Currently, Chevrolet sells Cruze amongst compact car category. Spark, Beat and Sail fall under city car category being sold in the Indian Market. Beat launched in 2010 increased the market share significantly. Tavera and Captiva are its good sellers SUVs. Captiva was launched during 2008 International Auto Expo. Its only MPV, Enjoy, was launched in 2013. Aveo, Aveo U-VA, Optra, and Optra SRV were discontinued.
Chevrolet Sales India Pvt. Ltd. operates its plants in Halol, Gujarat and Talegaon Dabhade, Maharashtra with a collective manufacturing capacity of 385,000 vehicles annually. The headquarters are in Halol and Gurgaon and technical center was established in Bangalore. There are more than 205 dealerships across India and around 200 service stations.
When General Motors in the US went bankrupt, it had no impact on the Indian operations. The sales have been increasing every year and they are catering well to the needs of the people. Now after having understood the Indian market, they are planning to launch more models in years to come.
